Dakar Rally 2011

On the 1st of January the Dakar Rally will again start from Buenos Aires and cross Argentina and Chili for 10.000 kilometers in 15 days. Though it is not always that easy to see the trucks, cars and bikes pass during the different stages, as they are mostly run in quite deserted areas, there are some good places in and around BA where you can get close up with the drivers and their vehicles.

First possibility is on the road between Zarate ( the harbor to the North of Buenos Aires and the place where all vehicles are unloaded after arriving from Europe) and downtown Buenos Aires. Teams can pick up their cars on the 27th of December and then drive their cars to their temporary stays, mostly at Puerto Madero hotels such as the Hilton.

These hotels are the second good place to see the vehicles as most teams will do some last minute checks on their vehicles in front or directly on the side of these hotels. On the 29th and 30th then all vehicles have to go to the final inspection at La Rural, a big tradefair complex located next to the US Embassy close to the main Libertador Avenue and across from the Buenos Aires Zoo. The cars will then stay here parked in the streets until their departure on the 1st of January

On the 1st they leave here and drive up Libertador towards Avenida de Julio, where directly next to the Obelisk the official start is. From here they head up the highway towards the first bivouac at Victoria in Entre Rios province.

When the cars return to Buenos Aires on the 15th you can first see them for a final special stage at a small race circuit on the north side of the city, named Baradero. Then they return to La Rural to park all cars again and meet their waiting family and friends.

Finally there is a big finish ceremony on Sunday the 16th also at La Rural. If we all make it, I will be arriving there as well, driving a support vehicle for the no. 406 entrants, a Toyota RAV 4 Prototype from the Van Eikeren Dakar Team.

I have put up a little googlemap with all details of the route, should you be willing to go watch somewhere in the desert during the Rally, or be in Cordoba, Salta or San Juan, when the Rally passes there. http://www.buenosairespa.com/Dakar.html

Hope to see you somewhere on the way.
