Polo in Argentina

Though nowhere near as popular as football, polo is a big sport in Argentina as well, specially compared to almost every other country in the world.

Argentina's Top 5 National Parks

Argentina covers an enormous area and therefore has some of the most diverse landscapes and climates in the world within its borders.

Outside BA: Peninsula Valdes

A peninsula on the Atlantic coast in the north east of Chubut Province, Valdes is one of the most important nature reserves in Argentina and since 1999 a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Top 10 best bars in Buenos Aires

The second biggest city in South America is indeed a city that never sleeps. Since clubs normally don’t open before midnight, what better way to start your evening with a visit to one of the 10 best bars in Buenos Aires.

The 5 best wineries to visit in Mendoza

Argentine wine is rightfully famous around the world and most visitors who come to Mendoza try to visit at least one vineyard to see the intricate process of making (and tasting) first class wine with their own eyes.

Outside in Buenos Aires: Parks & Pools

With summer heat in the city often approaching anything between 30 and 35 degrees centigrade, finding a place outside where you can get some fresh air and maybe even some fresh water to enjoy gets very important. However with the Plata being so full of all kinds of waste, going for a dip on the shoreline is hardly advisable and public recreation options on the river are few and far between.

Dakar Rally 2011

On the 1st of January the Dakar Rally will again start from Buenos Aires and cross Argentina and Chili for 10.000 kilometers in 15 days. Though it is not always that easy to see the trucks, cars and bikes pass during the different stages, as they are mostly run in quite deserted areas, there are some good places in and around BA where you can get close up with the drivers and their vehicles.

A break from steak

Even with the unfortunate rise of soybean growing, Argentina still produces some of the best beef in the world and when visiting Buenos Aires you will no doubt eat quite a few of those prime cuts at such legendary restaurants as El Estrebe, La Cabrera or Las Lilas

However even the most hardened carnivore might like to change his regular diet now and again. Sometimes it may seem like Buenos Aires only offers steak or Italian food, but luckily there are some good alternatives, especially in Asian and Fusion Asian food.

Outlet shopping in Buenos Aires

Shopping in Buenos Aires is fairly straightforward. You have the busy central pedestrian mall of Florida, the designer labels in Palermo Soho, you have the huge shopping malls spread around the city, such as Abasto, Alto Palermo, Dot, Unicenter and all other goods are often confined to one street or block where shops that sell the same products group together.

San Luis and what Rodriguez Saa might be able to do for Argentina

Almost every time some friends come over for a first visit to this beautiful country, I like to show them a bit more than just Buenos Aires and its immediate surroundings. This also means that normally I take a car and drive them around the country for a week or so to take a look at some of the highlights.

Tango at La Viruta

Most of my Argentinean friends are not interested in tango and for the younger crowd the amazing boliches (see earlier post) nowadays seem to hold more attractions. Though not the pervasive force it once was, tango is still everywhere to be found in Buenos Aires ranging from Florida street in downtown and the San Telmo antique market on Sundays to fancy upmarket shows which, though often very impressive, are more geared at tourists.

Polo in Argentina

Though nowhere near as popular as football, polo is a big sport in Argentina as well, specially compared to almost every other country in the world. Most people might only know polo through movies like Pretty Woman and whilst it can be a somewhat expensive hobby, everybody is more than welcome as a spectator and the biggest matches in Buenos Aires attract up to 25,000 visitors.

Football in Argentina

Football is the main spectator sport in Argentina and more than 90% of Argentineans support a team. As with so many things in Argentina most of the sport is focused in and around Buenos Aires with almost all the big teams residing in BA and its suburbs, the only notable exception being Estudiantes, who hail from La Plata, though even that is not very far from the city.

The Printed Media

If you just arrive in Argentina and want to try to make some sense of what’s happening in daily life and politics in general, the English language daily Buenos Aires Herald is an excellent start. However if after a few months your Spanish is up to speed and you want to get some unbiased news in Castellano, things tend to get more complicated.
Argentina has the highest newspaper circulation in Latin America and the biggest daily newspapers are the popular Clarin and the more high-brow La Nacion. Both newspapers however are in a vendetta at the moment with the Kirchner government, which sometimes seems to cloud their judgement a bit.

Hello friends, family & vague acquaintances ;-)

Welcome to my blog. Here I hope to keep you posted on my new life in Argentina. More news soon!
