Even with the unfortunate rise of soybean growing, Argentina still produces some of the best beef in the world and when visiting Buenos Aires you will no doubt eat quite a few of those prime cuts at such legendary restaurants as El Estrebe, La Cabrera or Las Lilas
However even the most hardened carnivore might like to change his regular diet now and again. Sometimes it may seem like Buenos Aires only offers steak or Italian food, but luckily there are some good alternatives, especially in Asian and Fusion Asian food.
This also takes care of the lack of spices you may have experienced as most Argentineans like their food a bit on the bland side, compared to what we are nowadays used to in the Northern Hemisphere.
Some of my favourite places for Asian food are:
Green Bamboo: A great Vietnamese place in Palermo Hollywood at Costa Rica 5802 with a modern decor and an amazing cocktail list.
Osaka: The original Japanese-Peruvian restaurant. Part of a chain spread across South America. A great place to eat sushi and of course ceviche, the ultimate Peruvian fusion dish. Located at Soler 5608 in Palermo Soho
M Buenos Aires: The newest venture of Osaka founder and chef Daniel Delgado Jitsuya. Bit more adventurous than Osaka and great food as well, but most of all beautifully located in a 200 year old former monastery and customs depot. Also includes a great wine cellar with weekly tasting sessions and a theatre and event space where Astor Piazzola used to perform regularly when it was still a milonga (tango dance club) named Michelangelo, also known as the cathedral of tango. Piazzola even named one of his own compositions after this place. Must see in my book. Located near Plaza de Mayo and San Telmo at Balcarce 433
Lotus Neo Thai: The best Thai restaurant in town. Used to be near the polo fields in Las Canitas and nowadays resides in the small Chinatown on the borders of Palermo and Belgrano. Here you can get some really spicy food. Arribeños 2265 in Barrio Chino
Dragon Porteno: Chinese food as I love it. Great food, inexpensive and no decor to speak of, unless you are a big fan of formica and plastic. Also no website and they only take cash. You come here for the food alone and that's more than worth it IMO. Located just outside Chinatown proper at Mendoza 2368 in Belgrano
Hong Kong Style: Another great Chinese restaurant this time located directly in Chinatown and across from the local bus- en trainstation Belgrano C. The local Chinatown, a small stretch of around 5 blocks along Arribenos from Juarmento to Monroe also houses some big Chinese supermarkets. These not only sell all kinds of Asian food and spices, but are also a great place to get fresh fish at normal prices and they also stock quite some comfort food from the US and Europe for homesick expats. Hong Kong Style is a perfect place for lunch after Saturday morning food shopping along Arribenos street. Located at Montañeses 2149 in Barrio Chino
I hope these places help you to cleanse your palate from all that steak, so that the days after you can uhh, well, eat some steak again. After all you are still in Argentina and you will miss that meat when you are back home again.
